Seasonal evolution of hydrographic fields in the central Middle Atlantic Bight from glider observations

چکیده
[1] The first sustained glider observations in the Middle Atlantic Bight are used to describe the seasonal evolution of hydrographic fields off New Jersey. Near-surface temperatures respond to the seasonal cycle of surface heating, while waters at depth are primarily influenced by advection of cold waters from the north in the cold-pool during spring/summer, and warming due to mixing during fall. The thermocline thickness increases in the offshore direction. Salinity presents seasonal variability due to river discharge and wind variations, with low-salinity waters spanning 100 km across the shelf from May to September in a 10 m thick surface layer. Stratification intensifies from April/May to late summer, especially within 80 km from the coast. The pycnocline deepens in the water column during late summer, while the passage of storms during fall rapidly reduces the stratification. The glider high-resolution observations allowed for unprecedented detailed characterization of the spatial scales of variability. Citation: Castelao, R., S. Glenn, O. Schofield, R. Chant, J. Temperature, salinity, and density variability in the central Middle Atlantic Bight
[1] Four years of sustained glider observations are used to compute the seasonal cycle of hydrographic fields in the central Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB). Results reveal a large phase lag in near bottom temperatures, with peak values occurring in September at the inner shelf, in October at the mid shelf, and in November at the outer shelf. Unlike the northern MAB, the seasonal cycle explains ove...
متن کاملMonthly climatology of the continental shelf waters of the South Atlantic Bight
Monthly circulation of the South Atlantic Bight is diagnosed using a 3-D, shallow water, finite element model forced with monthly wind stress and hydrographic climatology. Temperature and salinity observations from the period 1950-99 are objectively interpolated onto the model domain, and Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS) wind velocities from 1975-1999 are used to prescribe the mo...
متن کاملAn assessment of the skill of real-time models of Mid-Atlantic Bight continental shelf circulation
[1] Prescribing open boundary conditions for regional coastal ocean models encounters the challenge of imposing information on sea level, velocity and tracers that characterize the unrepresented far field ocean. Deriving such information from a larger domain model without communicating information from the ‘‘nested’’ model back to the exterior model is ‘‘downscaling’’. We evaluate whether real-...
متن کاملGlider observations of sediment resuspension in a Middle Atlantic Bight fall transition storm
In October of 2003 a fleet of autonomous underwater gliders began a time series of transects across the New Jersey shelf. The gliders are equipped with a conductivity–temperature–depth sensor, and some carry optical ECO-sensor pucks. The physical–optical data are used to examine storm-induced sediment resuspension. There are two types of storm response found. In summer, the seasonal stratificat...
متن کاملOn Estuarine and Continental-Shelf Circulation in the Middle Atlantic Bight
We shall attempt in this chapter to trace the development of ideas about circulation over the continental shelf in the Middle Atlantic Bight and in the major estuaries which drain into the Middle Atlantic Bight. The term Middle Atlantic Bight refers to the curved section of the continental shelf off the eastern United States stretching between Cape Hatteras to the south and Cape Cod and Nantuck...
